Crater Lake National Park is one of the jewels in the United
States National Parks collection.
The lake was created some 7,000 years ago when Mount Mazama
erupted and the top 5,000 feet of the mountain was blown away. The five mile
wide lake that resulted is ringed by cliffs that rise 2000 feet high.
Volcanic eruptions since the "big bang" created the small volcanic island in
the centre of the lake which is called Wizard Island.
Visitors to this famous United States tourist attraction can
enjoy a boat tour around the lake.
